Science
6th grade science is divided into three main catagories we refer to each of these as science kits.
Diversity of Life: What is life? We usually know it when we see it, but what is it? This unit of study introduces students to the big picture of life on Earth. Students discover that all living things, despite their complexity, share the same basic characteristics. Students learn that all organisms (bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals) are composed of cells, and that a single cell is the fundamental unit of life. Students explore the relationship of organisms to their environment, and recognize life as a temporary condition experienced for various lengths of time by all living things.
Catastrophic Events: Catastrophic Events is divided into 3 parts - storms, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Students investigate the causes and effects of thunderstorms, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. Global heating, plate tectonics, ash, and effects on the atmosphere are studied in depth.
Properties of Matter: This hands-on science unit offers a series of carefully designed inquiries in 3 sections: Characteristic Properties of matter, Mixtures and Solutions, and Compounds, Elements, and Chemical Reactions. Students look at elements and classify them into groups based on characteristic properties. They then compare these groups with their position on the periodic table.
These two sites are interactive activities and resources for students and parents. Our Diversity of Life unit can be found in the Middle School site. Both sites have links that relate to all our science units and units from previous grades.
